Odette
Artwork by Sarah Alvarez
Odette is the protagonist of Swan Lake, a princess cursed by the sorcerer Rothbart to be a swan by day and a human only at night. The curse can only be broken by a vow of “true and faithful love” from a prince. Alvarez has captured the essence of Odette’s story through her illustration.
Sarah Alvarez is a Kentucky-based artist, jewelry designer and metalsmith.
Her work transforms her struggles with intrusive thoughts and compulsions into surreal and unsettling forms. The work is inspired by the late Vivienne Westwood’s rebellious work, timeless vintage fashion, and the melancholic beauty of Southern Gothic aesthetics. Using unconventional and found objects, like doll parts and broken jewelry, she shows truths that can not be said out loud, relating to the discarded trinkets.
She is a co-founder of The Grate Society, a student-led group of artists passionate in organizing and promoting their own shows to exhibit their individual artworks. Her work has been featured in multiple local galleries across Kentucky and Ohio. She has also been published both online and in print in issues 1-3 of Beloved, a NYC-based magazine centering around the relationships and dynamics of the femmebutch lesbian community.
